(( Character Portrayal - READ BEFORE APPLYING! ))

The community counts on LSFD Firefighters to respond to emergency situations and protect the public. This includes extinguishing fires, technical rescues, responding to hazardous materials incidents and more.

EMTs can respond to emergencies ranging from automobile accidents to major fires. When they arrive at an emergency, they quickly determine the nature and extent of the patients condition.

LOS SANTOS FIRE DEPARTMENT CHARACTER PORTRAYAL GUIDE - READ BEFORE APPLYING
INTRODUCTION
This topic will outline expectations for prospective applicants for the Los Santos Fire Department. Please note that, if your character is not in compliance with these guidelines, then we may choose to not proceed with your application. Your character must also fit the basic recruitment requirements that are stated in the job listing of the position you are applying for.

First and foremost, we're looking for realistic characters. A vast portion of our faction is based on the Los Angeles Fire Department. A lot of our rules, policies, and operations come from LAFD documentation (within reason), and continuity is a very large goal that the faction maintains with its real-life counterparts.

Passive roleplay is highly encouraged, as this faction is not full of calls 24/7. The passive interactions you'd have in your day-to-day life with the people around you and with your environment are what help to make this faction feel alive and special. Examples of this can include things such as trainings, participating in spontaneous community engagement, working out, going to the store to buy food for the shift, and cleaning equipment, facilities or apparatus just as a fire department does in real life.
I. LAFD EMPLOYEE DEMOGRAPHICS
Despite the LAFD advertising and encouraging a more diverse recruitment pool, only 3% of the department are women. Nearly 50% of the 3,200 uniformed LAFD employees are white, with white males being the overwhelming majority of any demographic throughout the organization.

LAFD Sworn Workforce Racial Demographics
  • Caucasian - 48%
  • Hispanic - 31%
  • Black - 12%
  • Asian - 8%
  • Other - 1%
The likelihood of somebody moving to America just to pursue a job with the LSFD or meeting the educational requirements is incredibly slim. Most applicants are native to America - and while exceptions may be made for regions like Canada, Hawaii, Mexico and Puerto Rico, having your character be native to anywhere else without a solid and well defined back story may lead to a denial.
II. CHARACTER STORY
Having your character apply with some existing knowledge or experience in the Firefighting or EMS world is by no means frowned upon, but your story will need to be realistic. Proof will be asked for during the hiring process and all of your necessary training will still be required within the faction.

Military service is not uncommon, however we strongly encourage you to research what it is that you're roleplaying. Researching the branch, ages, ranks, and what sort of MOS would go along with your story is encouraged to be as we will be looking into that information as well. Most university courses last for 3-4+ years, and the vast majority of military services have a MINIMUM of four years of service as well, meaning you would have to be a minimum of 22 years old to apply with such experience.

Keep in mind that you are not required to have any prior knowledge to apply for the faction. We offer manuals, field training, and additional material and in-game training to help encourage new members to join regardless of experience or knowledge inside and outside of the game.

It's also important to keep in mind that you will be participating in role-playing that at times can get emotional, gory, bloody and detailed.
III. ASSETS & SECONDARY JOBS
It is no secret that Firefighters and EMTs are not the richest people in the world. Due to the way the script works, you will always have more money than your character would actually have - but this does not mean you are able to spend all of it. Realistically, your prospective LSFD character would not be driving a high-speed vehicle and living in a house in Vinewood Hills.

Businesses are incredibly expensive to pay for - both initially and going forwards with upkeep, maintenance, day-to-day operations and more. They also are incredibly time-consuming when you take into account taxes, paperwork, accounting, supervising employees and general business management. Volunteers have a bit more freedom with this as they are not paid City Employees. Bare in mind that
first responders work a variety of shift rotations ranging from 24 hours on, 48 hours off, to far more extremes where your free time is spent preparing to return to work in forms of resting, laundry, and meal prepping with limited off time.

Housing can also be expensive to upkeep with rent, furniture, maintenance, security costs, and general living such as food, clothes, outings, travel, etc. Certain areas of the map are restricted to particular ranks due to keeping realism in mind to a reasonable extent. We understand that circumstances vary but, for the most part, discourage faction members to own properties in these areas until criteria has been met.

Vehicles also need to be considered. A Firefighter's salary is incredibly unlikely to be able to afford high-end cars like Jesters, Carbonizzares, or VST-Rs. Planes and boats also fall into the same category - your character is unlikely to be able to afford these along with all the upkeep and maintenance a vehicle like this would require from you constantly.

Secondary Jobs are permitted within the faction to a certain extent. It's very common for a Firefighter or EMT to take up small gigs like bartending during their days off, but this would likely not be a full-time job. This highly relies on common sense. Bare in mind that faction leadership reserves the right to object to career paths that may harm the department.
. FULL-TIME SECONDARY EMPLOYMENT OR EMPLOYMENT INVOLVING ADULT ENTERTAINMENT OR MODELLING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. .
Asset checks are run frequently by LSFD Management - including on all of the above along with any other secondary jobs a character may have. Should you be found to be violating these policies, LSFD Management will reach out to you in an attempt to solve the situation - however, if you are asked to sell an asset and refuse to, then you may be liable to internal disciplinary actions including warnings, suspensions or possible termination of employment for severe cases.

If you are unsure on if your assets are OK, we highly encourage you to ask and we will be more than happy to look into this for you. Details on the best places for contact are stated at the end of this thread.
IV. CHARACTER BEHAVIOR/DEMOGRAPHIC POLICIES
Certain types of characters or roleplay either require an application or are downright prohibited.

People who want to portray an extreme minority in the department must present an outstanding backstory and reasons why they should be trusted to play the character and not someone else. Bear in mind, however, that we are trying to do our best to honor those that do this and would prefer to stay away from anyone who would exploit this as a fetish character, as has previously occurred.

As we strive to balance our demographics, please bear in mind that adhering to our requirements does not guarantee that you will be accepted into the faction.

Characters who are overly sexualized, childish, viewed as insane, or considered to be weeb or anime based are completely prohibited and will not be endorsed by the faction in any way. We seek out regular Joes and Janes from your everyday life.

If you are found to have lied during your application about your character's development/personality, you will be instantly terminated from the faction on OOC grounds.
CLOSING STATEMENT
Overall, our goal is for you and the rest of the faction to have fun while roleplaying realistic characters. Firefighters and EMTs are still regular people with their own lives, personalities, and experiences, but they all recognize the boundaries of respect, family, and brotherhood. Dark comedy is highly frequent among first responders as a coping mechanism and a lot of the bond between first responders comes from traumatic events and calls that ordinary civilians would not experience.

Respect is fundamental with superiors, other agencies, and co-workers. Pranks and jokes are fine to an extent but all of the aforementioned points must be kept in mind. You are expected to keep your actions, both on duty and off duty, in mind as the personnel help reflect the department as a whole.

Good luck! Please feel free to message Recruitment & Retention Command on the forums with any questions or join our discord at https://discord.gg/9WkSmvjtZF. Questions may also be asked in the Question & Answers thread.
