The term 'Scope of Practice' defines the range of roles, functions, responsibilities and activities which a department member is educated, competent and has the authority to perform. Members of certain divisions with exclusive certifications may have the priority to handle specific incidents regardless of on-scene ranking. The Los Santos Fire Department issues the following certifications:

The term 'Scope of Practice' defines the range of roles, functions, responsibilities and activities which a department member is educated, competent and has the authority to perform. Members of certain divisions with exclusive certifications may have the priority to handle specific incidents regardless of on-scene ranking. The Los Santos Fire Department issues the following certifications:

- Fire Certification: Certification issued to all department firefighters upon completion the Fire Academy.
- EMT Certification: Certification issued to all department EMTs and firefighters upon completion the Academy.
- Paramedic Certification: Mandatory certification for Paramedic I onwards (EMS) and optional for firefighters until Fire Captain I.
- Wildland Firefighting Certification: Certification for elective course to cover the tactics of wildland firefighting provided by T&R.
- Maritime Firefighting Certification: Certification for elective course to cover maritime firefighting provided by T&R.
- Apparatus Operator Certification: Mandatory certification for Engineers to perform the role of Apparatus Operator.
- Metro Operator Certification: Optional certification to assume priority for dispatching. Also known as Dispatch Operator.
- Technical Rescue Certification: Certification required to perform specialized rescue as members of Urban Search and Rescue Division including full-time, on-call and part-time Dive. (Refer to HERE for types of rescues.)
- Rescue Diver Certification: Certification required to perform dive as a member of either Urban Search and Rescue or Lifeguards.
- Aerial Firefighting Certification: Certification required to perform the duties of Air Operations as Pilot. (Aeromedic, Winchman and Flight Crew are in-house certifications.)
- Division-specific certifications for Operations Bureau are revoked once/if members' involvement with their division is terminated.
- Low-Angle Rope Rescue (LARRO), Structural Collapse and Machinery/Elevator rescue can be performed by all firefighters with USAR preferred to be present.
- Specialized-rescue (Refer HERE) cannot be performed single-handedly. If understaffed, a consent from the USAR division leaders is required unless ESD cannot be reached out as final resort.
- Members with advanced certifications (Paramedic/EMS) can take over medical scenes over EMT-certified higher-ranked members.
- Failure of appropriately role-playing your certifications (i.e. lack of knowledge, powergaming) may result in a punishment.
