Welcome to May 2020's instalment of the Los Santos Fire Department newsletter!

As the mercury rises, it's getting busier and busier for the Los Santos Fire Department. This month we'll be taking a look at the newly incorporated Lifeguards Division and celebrating the extraordinary work of our members in ensuring the safety of every single citizen of San Andreas, as we strive to do day in and day out.

June 2020 brings a wealth of opportunities for the Los Santos Fire Department as the summer season begins to hit. To those who have applied in our most recent recruitment wave, we wish you the best of luck and hope you'll be joining the family soon!

Featured Division
At the end of each month we feature a division in our newsletter, explaining what the division does, what they've been doing and a statement from the division leader.

Los Santos Lifeguards Image
Beach Captain Rory Amber wrote: Los Santos County Lifeguards are a relatively new introduction. Briefly featured in last months’ newsletter, we aim to cover who they are – and their role in a bit more detail.
Firstly, what do they do? The Lifeguard team are responsible for making sure that the beaches are safe for everyone to use. They are highly trained for a variety of scenarios, from dealing with basic first aid on the beach to performing life saving rescue techniques using specialist equipment.
The beach is split into three zones – zones A, B and C, with each zone having three towers. You might hear lifeguards refer to locations as, “B1”, for example. This means the first tower in zone B. Each zone has different flags that tell you a bit about the ocean conditions. If you see a red flag, we strongly advise not going into the water as it is very dangerous. For more information about flags and beach safety, visit our FaceBrowser page or ask any Lifeguard on the beach!
In the past few weeks, we have noticed an increased number of individuals needing to be warned or even rescued from rips – rips, also known as riptides, are incredibly powerful currents of water that should not be underestimated – and can kill you within minutes. If you ever find yourself being pulled out to sea, swim parallel to the shore – not against the rip.

Each month we give a member of the Los Santos Fire Department the opportunity to feature in our Newsletter, telling us a bit about themselves, where they're from, what they do and where they plan to go.

Firefighter II Taylor Porter Image
Born in the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, Taylor Porter had led a simple, 'country girl' lifestyle from a young age. Being the occasional farmhand on her family's plot has not only taught her how to work with various different animals, but has also instilled discipline, a trait which has stuck with her ever since

Having finished high school with fairly decent results, Taylor never considered enrolling in a university or college for further education, but rather, opted to serve in one of the military branches. One thing led to another, and Porter had ended up enlisted in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman. After four years of active service, including a trip around most of South America aboard the USNS Comfort, Taylor had left the Navy in search of a different career path.

After undergoing training, Porter joined the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department and served there for almost five years. Eventually, hoping for a change of scenery, Taylor decided to move to San Andreas and transferred to the LSFD, a choice she hasn't regretted.

Firefighter II Taylor Porter wrote:In our field of work, your 'most memorable moment' can change every single day, and I'm no different. Together with my amazing colleagues, we get the chance to embark on different challenges which test our skills and knowledge every single day we start our shifts. For now, though? My most memorable moment was when I got the chance to be one of the pallbearers for Captain Laura Murphy's funeral. It has been a true honor to lay one of my colleagues, but most importantly, a friend, to her final rest. May she forever rest in peace. I'm truly proud to have had the chance to join and serve this department. Every single one of you - you're my family, and even when the time will come for me to retire, I will never forget any of you. Let's continue working together, like one big family, and we'll continue achieving consistently great results. Together.

Chief's Statement
Image
Fire Chief Issac Hunter wrote: Hello! First off, I want to thank everyone in the department once more for all their hard work as of late. Things for the most part have been running pretty smoothly and it's all thanks everyone working hard around the clock. Now, there's something everyone needs to know: I will be resigning as the Fire Chief of the department. I will hold the position until it's the appropriate time to pass along the role. I will still be your Chief for a little while longer, but I felt it's my obligation to let everyone know ahead of time. I will still be available if you need to reach out to me for anything. I just want to say how proud I am of everyone in the department. Seeing everyone progress within the department and helping people reach their goals makes this job worth it at the end of the day. Please continue to let our citizens know why we are the best fire department anywhere! As for me, I will most likely be retiring. Maybe I will take a hobby. Fishing, maybe? Who knows! I'll just close by saying that it's been a fun ride and I hope I made you guys proud just as much as you made me proud of you all. Thank you all for everything.
